Surgery alone may not be enough to treat early-stage breast cancer


Although surgery is almost always used to treat early-stage breast cancer, sometimes there are some cancer cells that remain in the body. Also there is a small risk that the cancer may recur. For that reason, doctors use a variety of other treatments, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy and hormonal treatment. These treatments are given after the surgery to try to improve the chances of cure.
